What Causes a Yeast Infection?

It just struck me.  Here we have a blog dedicated to helping readers understand yeast infection and we have yet to post what causes a yeast infection.  I apologize.  Perhaps this should have been the first post but when dealing with any issue, I guess I tend to dig right in to the meat of it.  So, what causes a yeast infection?

What we refer to as yeast infection or thrush is actually a fungal infection called candidiasisCandida, the fungus, is actually a normal component of every human being.  It is only when there is an over growth of that candida that a yeast infection will occur.  Natural bacteria in the human body and the immune system will normally keep the candida from multiplying uncontrollably.  So what causes a yeast infection is anything that affects the natural habitat of the bacteria (lactobacilli) or a weakened immune system.  Internal disturbances of the lactobacilli can be caused by hormonal changes such as what occurs during pregnancy, or when taking any type of prescription medication containing hormones such as oral birth control pills, antibiotics and steroids as well as infertility treatment.

The lactobacilli’s natural habitat can also be encroached upon by using certain products.  Among those linked to what causes a yeast infection are:  lubricants which contain the ingredient glycerin; douches; and detergents.  Vaginal sex immediately following anal intercourse can also disturb the lactobacilli and be what causes a yeast infection.

As already mentioned, a weakened immune system is a common cause of a yeast infection.  Contributing conditions of a weakened immune system include: diabetes, cancer and cancer treatments, HIV, mononucleosis,  and even stress and chronic fatigue syndrom called myalgic encephalomylitis.

As you can see what causes a yeast infection can be a wide range of reasons.  The important thing to keep in mind is that it is not all that difficult to get under control.  Click here to find out more about what causes a yeast infection and how I cured my yeast infection in about 12 hours.
